Meridian receives IMA Automotive Cast Product Design Award

Nov 13, 2020 (China Knowledge) - Zhejiang Wanfeng Auto Wheel’s (002085) wholly-owned subsidiary Meridian Lightweight Technologies, providing innovative and cost-effective die cast magnesium solutions for the world’s leading automakers, received an award for Automotive Cast Product Design from the International Magnesium Association (IMA) on October 29, 2020.

This special die cast magnesium door upper beltline reinforcement was jointly developed by Meridian Lightweight Technologies and General Motors (NYSE: GM). The unique feature of this process is that the continuous beltline structure could resist elastic deflection at the corners at check loads, which improves durability. Compared with the previous design, the current single magnesium dies casting uses fewer materials and reduces casting processes. The result offers a lighter and thinner casting with a wall thickness of merely 2.5 mm and a weight reduction of 4 kg per vehicle. It also improves dimensional accuracy for fit and finishes.

This joint development with General Motors has shown each party the complementary advantages that both companies could benefit in the long run.
